Chinese scientists have overcome technical nightmare in making legal PMMA mutant type POF from mass polymerization after years of efforts. The Institute of Physics and Chemistry, CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences), has mastered the technology of continuous mass production of POF by producing millions meters of low attenuation, which break down the international dominance of Japan.According to the introduction of project leaders-Zhen Zhen and Liu Xin-Hou, the Institute has managed to drawn a package of plastic optical fiber directly from purified raw materials and bulk polymerization. The core technology is the high-purity and optical grade PMMA (core material), as well as preparative technique of cladding material.
It is reported that the Institute has successfully developed automatic assembly line by daily production of 100km PMMA plastic optical fiber, monthly output of PMMA fiber in 170-200dB/km optical attenuation, total production for millions of meters low loss plastic optical fiber, which indicates this industrial technology has been matured. Meanwhile, the Institute also has the great potential to mass production of optical attenuation in 150dB/km PMMA fiber. Product technical index can reach the international level for similar products. The advent technology of continuous mass production for low attenuation PMMA optical fiber marks China has ranked among the world's most advanced in this area.
China has put huge investment in national largest Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) industrial zone, which costs RMB2.636 billion last year as stated in previous news. It shows that Chinese Government and CAS have attached great importance to the application and popularization of Plastic Optical Fiber (POF). And the mass production of Plastic optical fiber in October this year will directly reduce the input cost of POF Network Access Equipments.
